Soil amendments can break up clay particles, allowing air, nutrients, moisture and the soil foodweb to penetrate dense compacted soils, allowing plant roots to follow suit. Other soil amendments can help balance soil structure, improve drainage and balance permeability.

Organic fertilizers and fertlizer blends add organic matter and specific nutrients and minerals to the soil, all of which are essential to act as food for the beneficial micro-organisms. These beneficial microorganisms then transform these nutrients into a form that is easily utilized by plants.

When unhindered, nature creates this organic balance on her own. Plant debris decays and becomes compost over time and provides the organic layer necessary for the soil foodweb to flourish. In today's gardens, plant debris is usually removed and the organic layer must be manually provided. Regular repeated applications of compost tea helps maintain the proper level of these microbes which are continually damaged by air and water pollution.
