Conditioning your soil is different than fertilizing your soil, and both play important roles in providing a fertile environment for optimum plant growth.

Fertilizing your soil is all about providing the food source for the microbes to proliferate and deliver nutrition to your plants. Your soil condition is all about the soil environment in which the microbes live and your plant grows.

A healthy living soil will have a balance in its texture so that it provides adequate moisture while draining well, provides adequate air while holding moisture, has a strong community of beneficial microbes, has density in particles to provide a strong mineral base, organic matter to hold nutrients and a pH that is friendly to plant growth and microbial activity.

When we add soil conditioners to our soil, our intention is to assist in creating that balance so we produce vibrant, nutritionally dense, disease resistant plants.

Axis DEAxisDE – Diatomaceous Earth

AxisDE® diatamacious earth is a premium soil amendment designed to reduce water usage, improve drainage, reduce soil compaction and improve plant health.
Its amazing characteristics greatly benefit soil for lawns, golf courses, landscaping and gardens, sports turf, rooftop gardens and growers.

AxisDE is 100% kiln-fired diatomaceous earth (DE), produced from pure diatomite deposits, the fossilized remains of freshwater plankton, found in the Nevada mountains. Diatoms are microscopic unicellular plant skeletons with a honeycombed, continuous pore structure that do not decompose. Thousands of diatoms make up each granule of AxisDE. AxisDE soil amendment contains no additives, is naturally porous, 82%, and therefore very absorbent. It adds pore space within the soil and opens it up so air, water and nutrients reach down to the root level. Nearly all of its pores absorb and release water. Landscaping and Gardens

With heavy play and practice schedules, soccer and football fields easily become compacted, resulting in worn or bare turf areas. CalprilCalpril® – Calcium Carbonate(Granulated Limestone)

Made by Nature’s Intent

Calpril® is limestone (calcium carbonate), a very beneficial soil conditioner, that is also often called agricultural lime or limestone, aglime, garden lime, or just plain “lime”. Our limestone comes from above ground limestone rock, and is crushed to a very fine powder. The smaller the particles in the powder, the more effective the lime is in reacting in the soil. For easier handling and application, the powder is then rolled into granules held together with a binding agent.

The binding agent used to make Calpril® is highly water-soluble. As soon as Calpril® granules come into contact with water, disintegration of the granule begins, and the many tiny particles which comprise the granule are released into the surrounding soil water medium and begin their work in the soil.

CalPril® benefits soil in many ways:

The primary reason for using lime is to correct the pH of highly acidic soils to improve plant growth and productivity. Availability of primary nutrients is hindered in low pH (acidic) soils, with some plants, legumes in particular, not able to grow at all. Soils become acidic in areas of high rainfall due to leaching; after continual crop removal that promotes soil mineral loss; and in response to applications of chemical fertilizers.

The ideal pH range for most soils is 6.0 to 6.5 pH because most plant nutrients are available in that rage. Rates of application of CalPril® to raise soil pH will depend on the texture of the soil itself.  The chart below shows the approximate amount of CalPril® needed to raise the pH of a 7” layer of soil, based on type of soil.

DoloprilDolopril® – Magnesium Carbonate (Granulated Dolomite Lime)

Dolopril® is dolomitic limestone (calcium magnesium carbonate)which contains approximately 60% calcium carbonate and 40% magnesium carbonate. Our limestone comes from above ground limestone rock, and is crushed to a very fine powder. The smaller the particles in the powder, the more effective the lime is in reacting in the soil. The main difference between between DoloPril and CalPril is the % of Calcium and Magnesium they contain. The ideal ratio of Calcium to Magnesium is 6:1. DoloPril contains an approximate 2:1 ratio, so it is most used when soils have a Magnesium deficiency. Because of the 50% calcium carbonate contained in DoloPril it still benefits the lowering of soil pH.

Availability of primary nutrients is hindered in low pH (acidic) soils, with some plants, legumes in particular, not able to grow at all. Soils become acidic in areas of high rainfall due to leaching; after continual crop removal that promotes soil mineral loss; and in response to applications of chemical fertilizers.

One application of Dolopril® can release magnesium into deficient soils in as little as 14 days. The magnesium also acts as a carrier for phosphate, benefiting a steady supply of plant available phosphate. Application rate will be dependent on the magnesium needs in your soil.
